Request for Public Examination

The request for public master’s or PhD exams must be prepared in advance, in order to ensure that, at the time of submission, your situation is regularized at UMinho and you have all the necessary documents, some of which depend on third parties (e.g., opinion of the (s) supervisors) or take some time to obtain (e.g., statement of academic progress, for PhD candidates only).

This request is submitted through the Electronic Desk of this Portal, option Request for Public Examination.


Request for Public Examination leading to the awarding of the Master’s Degree for students of the University of Minho

After the submission of the request for public examination, such shall be analysed by the School/Institute. The acceptance of the aforementioned request is hereby subjected to verification of its proper instruction and upon all applicable requirements being met by the student.

Requests for public examinations lacking documentation or containing false statements by the student shall not be followed up on. In this case, the student shall be notified to address any deficiencies potentially attributable to him.

In order to clarify any doubts on the request for public examinations, the student may contact the respective School/Institute.

Before submitting the Request for Public Examination, the student shall:
1. ensure that the document to be discussed under public examination (dissertation/project/internship report) is formatted and organized in accordance with the terms provided for in Order RT-31/2019;
2. be enrolled in the current academic year (or in a different academic year, as long as duly provided for in the regulations in force);
3. comply with the deadlines established in the regulations in force to request such examinations;
4. have been, in due time, admitted to dissertation/project/internship  by the Scientific Board/Technical-Scientific Board of the respective School/Institute;
5. prepare the uploading of the following documents (note: each document must correspond to a single pdf file.
The sum of the size of all uploaded files cannot exceed a maximum size of 500 MBytes:
     i) Master’s degree Work (dissertation/project/internship report);
     ii) Curriculum Vitae;
     iii) Opinion(s) of the adviser(s);
     iv) Statement relating to the deposit in the RepositóriUM;
     v) Request for exceptional deposit in the RepositóriUM (note: the request must be uploaded in the cases where option 2 or 3 of the statement in the previous line has been selected).


Request for Public Examination leading to the awarding of the Doctorate Degree for students of the University of Minho

After the submission of the request for public examination, such shall be analysed by the School/Institute of the University of Minho. The acceptance of the aforementioned request is hereby subjected to verification of its proper instruction and upon all applicable requirements being met by the student.

Requests for public examinations lacking documentation or containing false statements by the student shall not be followed up on. In this case, the student shall be notified to address any deficiencies potentially attributable to him.

In order to clarify any doubts on the request for public examinations, the student may contact the School/Institute, via the usual e-mail or phone contacts.

Before submitting the Request for Public Examination, the student shall:
1. ensure that the document to be discussed under public examination (thesis/work) is formatted and organized in accordance with the terms provided for in Order RT-31/2019;
2. be enrolled in the current academic year (or in a different academic year, as long as duly provided for in the regulations in force);
3. comply with the deadlines established in the regulations in force to request such examinations;
4. have, in due time, requested the registration of the topics of their thesis on the RENATES platform (https://renates.dgeec.mec.pt/) and hold the respective TID identifier;
5. take responsibility for submitting a paper copy of the thesis/work to the School/Institute, subject to appointment to be scheduled by email.
6. prepare the uploading of the following documents (note: each document must correspond to a single pdf file.
The sum of the size of all uploaded files cannot exceed a maximum size of 500 MBytes):
     i) Doctorate Work (thesis/work);
     ii) Curriculum Vitae;
     iii) Opinion(s) of the adviser(s);
     iv) Opinion of the Course Director (when applicable);
     v) Statement relating to the deposit in the RepositóriUM;
     vi) Request for exceptional deposit in the RepositóriUM (note: the request must be uploaded in the cases where option 2 or 3 of the statement in the previous line has been selected);
     vii) Statement of school transcripts (note: statement issued by the Academic Management Services of the University of Minho, upon request submitted by the student at Electronic DeskRequests> New Request> Various > Generic request > Declaration of school career for requesting public defense, in advance of the request for public examination;
     viii) Proof of payment of the emolument related to the request for public examination (note: the payment should be made through Store UMinho available at https://store.uminho.pt/pt/provas-de-doutoramento, according to the fees table available at  https://alunos.uminho.pt/EN/students/Pages/InfoUteisEmolumentos.aspx).

Doctoral students in co-tutorship must additionally prepare the uploading of the following documents:
    ix) Certificate of achievement of period (s) of studies or research.
    x) Specific protocol signed between the two universities where the student holds a PhD.

Students who respect the necessary requirements for the European Doctorate degree and who wish to apply for it must additionally prepare the uploading of the following documents:
    xi) Two favorable opinions to the acceptance of the doctoral thesis issued by professors that belong to two higher education institutions in two European countries, other than Portugal.
    xii) Certificate of achievement of period (s) of studies or research.
    xiii) Specific protocol signed between UMinho and the University receiving the doctoral student.

Theses, dissertations and other research work carried out within degree leading study cycles should be in accordance with the standards for Intellectual Property and Personal Data Protection
