Who can apply?
All students of UMinho or the partner Higher Education institutions are entitled to apply as long as they are registered and enrolled in a course from the first, second or third cycle of studies. For information on the eligibility criteria please refer to the Application Guide.
To which countries/Universities can I go?
Please consult the list of countries/Partner Universities in the Application Guide.
How long does the exchange programme lasts?
Please consult the Application Guide.
Do I have to pay tuition fees in the host University?
No, Erasmus students do not pay a tuition fee to the host institution They are, however, obliged to continue to pay tuition fees at their home University.
If I take part in this exchange programme, do I have to enrol at my home University?
Yes, you must be enrolled at your home University. As a matter of fact, non-compliance with this procedure prevents the academic recognition of your mobility period.
Who chooses the courses I am going to take in the host university?
All fields of studies have an Academic Coordinator at the home University, who will guide you through your choice of study plan, together with the Academic Coordinator at the host University who will also support you during your stay. The three parts involved - you, the home institution and the host institution - should agree on the programme abroad before the start of the mobility period. Therefore, a Learning Agreement for Studies will be drawn up and signed by you and by the Academic Coordinators of both Universities.
Where am I assessed?
You are assessed by the host University, meaning you must follow the evaluation methodologies imposed by that institution.
Does the period of studies abroad replace the equivalent period at the home University?
Yes, you will have full academic recognition as long as you successfully complete your plan of studies at the host University. At the end of the mobility period, the host University will send the “Transcript of Records” to the home University, with your marks and respective credits, with which the Academic Coordinator at the home University will start the academic recognition process.
What is the amount of ICM Mobility Scholarships?
ICM scholarships include two types of financial support: Stay Allowance and Contribution for Travel. The total value of the scholarships varies according to the country where the mobility takes place. It should be noted that Erasmus+ grants are not subsistence grants, but mobility grants, which are intended to bridge the gap between the standard of living of the home and the host country. Thus, Erasmus+ grants are not intended to cover all of the students' normal subsistence expenses, but rather the additional costs incurred in completing a period of study in another country. Participants cannot benefit from other EU funded scholarship. For specific information on the amounts of scholarships please consult the Application Guide.
Can I receive an Erasmus Study Scholarship if I am already the beneficiary of another scholarship?
Yes, as long as the scholarship that you receive is not funded by the European Union/European Commission. UMinho students who apply and are grant holders of an R&D project (e.g. FCT or other funding organisation) will have to present proof that they are eligible to participate in the programme and receive an Erasmus+ scholarship cumulatively to the grant they already have.
Where can I apply?
Before you apply you should learn about the Universities where you would like to study. Additionally, you should contact your Academic Coordinator at your home University in order to get information/guidance on the academic viability of performing a period of mobility in the University(ies) of your choice while safeguarding eventual academic and language requirements. Applications are made online. Please consult the Application Guide.
What are the selection criteria?
The final selection of candidates is made by UMinho, after the validation of the candidates by the home and the host institution. A jury composed by 3 members of UMinho will meet and decide the final award of the scholarships/grants, taking into account criteria such as: academic merit, relevance of the work plan, balanced distribution of scholarships between Partner Universities, gender balance, among others. The results will be communicated via email and will be published at
https://alunos.uminho.pt/EN/students/mobilityprograms/Pages/ICM.aspx
I have already taken part in an Erasmus Study Period can I apply again?
Yes, Erasmus+ Programme rules enable students to study abroad more than once as long as the minimum duration for each activity and a total maximum of 12 months per study cycle is respected. So, you can be an Erasmus as many times as you like as long as you do not exceed the absolute maximum period!
